A bright new era dawns for women’s football on Wednesday when the first ever semi-professional league in this country gets underway. In what is a big year for the sport - with the introduction of the FA backed Women’s Super League, the Women’s Champions League final being held at Fulham and also the Women’s World Cup in Germany - the WSL will aim to help professionalise women’s football and attract even more girls and fans to the game.

Over the summer eight teams - Arsenal, Birmingham City, Bristol Academy FC, Chelsea, Doncaster Rovers Belles, Everton, Lincoln and Liverpool - will compete to become the first Women’s Super League champions.

The tournament, which the Football Association has invested £3 million into, will run from April to October in a bid to step out of the shadow of other sports and increase attendances, but it will pause in May to accommodate the World Cup in Germany – in which England will take part.

Chairman of the FA David Bernstein has hailed the WSL, which will have five games televised live on ESPN.

He said: “This is a true landmark in the women’s game, a real opportunity for it to take off in England.

“The launch of this league together with England competing in the World Cup in Germany makes for an exciting summer of women’s football ahead.”
