Sai Baba Dies | Sathya Sai Baba Passed Away | Puttaparthi Sai Baba Dead | Sai Baba Death News

Spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba, who was hospitalized on March 28 following problems related to heart and respiration, passed away on Sunday morning. According to sources, Sai Baba breathed his last at 6.25am.

Baba's body for darshan will be kept at Sai Kulwant Hall on Monday and Tuesday, Sathya Sai Central Trust announced officially.

Preparations for last rites are under way. Four lakh devotees from India and abroad are expected to arrive.

For the first time since Baba was admitted toSathya Sai Baba super speciality on March 27, the doctors did not issue a morning bulletin on Sunday.

Sathya Sai Central Trust, which runs social service activities in India and abroad, is to hold a media conference at 11 am.

In the Saturday evening bulletin, the doctors had termed Baba's condition as very critical.

Fearing the worst, hundreds of devotees in the town broke down as their hopes for recovery of the 85-year-old spiritual guru appeared to be fading.

Major industries minister Geeta Reddy and senior government officials rushed to the hospital on Sunday morning and were holding meeting with doctors and trust officials before making an announcement.

The state government has gone on high alert.

More than 6,000 policemen were rushed to the town for deployment and to make arrangements for the visits of VIPs.

Singapore Parliament Dissolved | Singapore Election Date | Singapore election on May 7 , 2011

 Singapore dissolved parliament Tuesday and set May 7 as the date for a general election in which the ruling party is expected to face its toughest political challenge in decades.

The People's Action Party (PAP), led by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, holds a commanding grip on power, but analysts say rising discontent over bread-and-butter issues could boost a historically weak opposition, giving them more seats in the 87-member legislature.

The ruling party held 82 out of 84 seats after the last election in May 2006, albeit with 66.6% of the popular vote. Three more members will be elected in this poll following revisions to electoral boundaries earlier this year.

Opposition parties say they plan to contest all parliamentary seats, an unprecedented move that would mean the balance of power won't be decided when parties have to name candidates on April 27.

"The opposition parties are going into this election on a far firmer footing, with a far wider range of information available to the electorate thanks to social media, and as a result (the opposition) are far more confident of the outcome," Dr. Vincent Wijeysingha, assistant treasurer of the opposition Singapore Democratic Party, told Dow Jones Newswires.

"People want more effective representation in Parliament. People want to be heard. People want their concerns and their alternative ideas to have bearing in the public space," Wijeysingha said.

No one expects the opposition to win, or even seriously challenge the PAP's grip on power. But a stronger opposition represents another step along Singapore's slow road to greater pluralism and liberalization.

The election comes as the PAP is looking for ways to maintain its relevance in coming decades, bringing in new and younger candidates and trying to attract younger voters.

Founded by former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, the PAP has controlled Parliament since Singapore's independence in 1965, and its lawmakers held all seats in the legislature until 1981.

The party is credited with creating a prosperous financial dynamo on this small, resource-poor island: The economy is projected to grow 4%-6% this year, after surging 14.5% in 2010.

But the government faces mounting criticism for Singapore's dependence on foreign workers, as well as for stagnant wages, high inflation and an income gap that's one of the largest among developed countries and growing wider.

Government data shows foreigners make up over a quarter of Singapore's 5.1 million people, up from 19% in 2000. According to the U.N., the city-state's Gini coefficient--a measure of income inequality where zero reflects total equality and one reflects maximal inequality--was at 0.425 for the 2000-2010 period, the second-highest among 42 nations with "very high human development."

Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, a former prime minister, acknowledged Monday that inflation worries mean "the ground may not be sweet" for the ruling party this time.

"In this environment, it is a much harder sell for the incumbent," CIMB economist Song Seng Wun said. "There is enough of a groundswell of dissatisfaction for the opposition to play on."

Singapore's often-fragmented opposition is also better poised to ride these tailwinds, having swelled its ranks with several high-caliber candidates, including a top corporate lawyer, academics and former civil servants.

In four of the past nine elections, the opposition contested fewer than half the seats. This time, though no opposition party is strong enough to contest all seats by itself, opposition leaders reached agreement last month to collectively challenge all constituencies this time around.

The Workers' Party, which won one seat in 2006, is likely to field the most candidates, probably more than 20. The National Solidarity Party, Singapore Democratic Party, Reform Party and the Singapore People's Party also will contest seats.

"This is going to be the most competitive election since independence, with the strongest opposition slate in Singapore's history," said Cherian George, an associate professor studying media and politics at the city-state's Nanyang Technological University.

"Nobody, including the PAP, would be surprised if the ruling party's share of the popular vote dipped below the 66.6% they enjoyed in the last election," George said.

To woo the public, the government has rolled out populist policies including tighter immigration rules, property cooling measures and one-off budget handouts worth S$3.2 billion targeting lower-income residents. In its manifesto, released Sunday, the PAP also promised more jobs, higher incomes and greater investment in education and infrastructure.

Lee Kuan Yew, who is the current prime minister's father and now holds the title of Minister Mentor in the Cabinet, has said he will contest this election. If elected, he would be 92 at the end of his five-year term.

At the same time, the PAP is seeking to rejuvenate its leadership by bringing in 24 new candidates, from among whom it says Singapore's next generation of leaders may emerge. Several retiring ministers and backbench lawmakers will be replaced.

Whatever the outcome of the vote, at least nine opposition politicians will enter Parliament, as mandated by constitutional amendments passed last year. But that might include non-constituency legislators--defeated opposition candidates with the best results--who have limited voting rights.

Opposition parties face other significant hurdles, including Singapore's use of a system in which most members of Parliament are elected in teams rather than individually.

In addition, PAP leaders in the past have successfully sued opposition politicians for defamation. PAP leaders say they welcome debate and file lawsuits only to protect their reputations.

We have seen the same 'it' dress making it to two big fashion magazine covers in the same month. We've also seen the same person making it to two magazine covers in the same month.

But we haven't seen two pregnant celebrities showing off their baby bumps for the cover of the same magazine in the same month. Glamour magazine OK! might have scored a first of sorts in the department.

Their UK and India covers for the month of April have the same theme, though with two different celebs. With international pop diva Mariah Carey and Bollywood actress Konkona Sen showing off their baby bumps for the UK and the Indian editions respectively, the covers look like following the same brief.

While strikingly similar in theme, the covers are drastically different in treatment. The UK cover of the magazine with Mariah has a fun, sexual vibe to it, with husband Nick Cannon holding her topless breasts tenderly.

The 42-year-old singing sensation is laughing, with husband holding her from behind. She is wearing nothing apart from her tousled hair flowing down. But then, the eternal diva Mariah has been less than shy about her expectant figure. She also recently appeared topless on the cover of Life & Style Weekly. That was followed by the singer tweeting a picture of her pregnant belly being covered with butterflies.

Konkona's photo, on the other hand, is pictured keeping the Indian taste and sensibility in mind. Considering she's only the second Indian celeb, after actress Tara Sharma, to have done a cover with her bump showing, she made sure it didn't look too 'out there'. Wearing an off- shoulder cape in an olive green colour, she's seen holding her bump and smiling tenderly while looking at it.

The long side braid, her au naturel look and serene expression is completely different from Mariah's picture. Koko and her husband, actor Ranvir Shorey, became the proud parents of a baby boy about a month ago. Mariah, pregnant with twins, will become a mother soon.

The Google home page featured a YouTube video starring members of Google Doodle team enacting Charlie Chaplin scenes. Google put up the Chaplin doodle a day ahead of the film legend's birthday.

Charlie Chaplin was born on 16 April 1889 in London. He began his career in the entertainment industry as a child actor on stage and got into the world of movies when he moved to the United States.

Though his first fim, Making a Living (1914), was not a great success, Chaplin's second film Kid Auto Races at Venice (1914) gave him the tramp image that would remain his trademark for many movies to come. The best of Chaplin came when he turned director. His most notable films include The Tramp (1915), The Kid (1921), The Gold Rush (1925), City Lights (1931). The Great Dictator (1940) was Chaplin's first full talkie. Chaplin was knighted in 1975 by Queen Elizabeth. He died on Christmas Day 1977.

Titanic Sinking 99th Year Anniversary | RMS Titanic Ship Sunk April 15,1912

On the night of April 14th, 1912, the R.M.S Titanic, bound from Southampton to New York, on her Maiden Voyage, collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic. The iceberg ripped open the first 5 compartments and the Titanic sank in the early hours of April 15th, taking the lives of 1,523 men, women and children. ONLY 705 survived that night.

Some Interesting Facts on the Titanic

While the tragic sinking of the Titanic is still shocking and a bit unnerving, many of theTitanic facts are quite interesting.

• The ship was loaded with only enough lifeboats to hold half of the Titanic passengers. There were 20 of them with a total capacity of 1178 people.
• Some of the limited lifeboats were lowered to the waters only half-full.
• Further facts on the Titanic indicate that the ship received information earlier regarding the presence of ice floes in the vicinity, yet continued to speed full throttle ahead towards tragedy.
• Among the property reported as lost on the Titanic were over 3000 bags of mail and an automobile.
• Each first class passenger paid a whopping $4,350 for a parlor suite ticket and $150 for a berth ticket.
• The ship contained a heated swimming pool, a first for any sailing vessel.
• The ship was still so brand new when passengers boarded it on April 10, 1912 that the paint was still wet in some spots.
• Every stateroom contained electric lighting and heat.
• Of the 1517 people of perished in the sinking of the Titanic, only 306 bodies wererecovered.
• The largest percentage of survivors came from first class passengers.
• Even though directions have been given for women and children to board the lifeboats first, a number of men were reported as survivors while a surprisingly large number of women and children perished in the disaster. Most of the women and children lost in the sinking came from second and third class.
• Sadly, Captain Smith had made plans to retire after seeing the Titanic safely across the Atlantic on her maiden voyage.
• It cost $7,500,000 to build the Titanic.
• It took three years to fully construct the ship.
• Among the provisions when the Titanic set sail in Southampton, England were 40,000 eggs, 75,000 pounds of fresh meat and 1,000 bottles of wine.
• The Titanic's total capacity was 3547 passengers + crew.
• The Titanic's weight fully loaded was 46,328 tons.
• The Titanic was 882 feet/268 meters long.
• There were 29 boilers on board of the ship.
• The ship consumed 825 tons of coal in one day.
• The top speed of the Titanic was 23 knots.
